Obituary for Earl Ray Adkins
Earl Ray Adkins, long time resident of Perkins, Oklahoma, passed away surrounded by his family at home on March 20, 2015. He was 86.
Honoring Mr. Adkins’ wishes upon his death, the family has coordinated arrangement through Strode Funeral Home to donate his body for educational and scientific research at United Tissue Network in Norman, Oklahoma.
A memorial service will be held at Lost Creek United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 2 PM. Max Rudd will officiate.
Earl Ray Adkins was born in Joplin, Missouri on January 17, 1929 to Hallie Everett and Margaret Anna (Sutherland) Adkins. He spent his childhood in and around Sarcoxie, Carl Junction and Joplin, Missouri. Earl later attended school in Tulsa and Perkins, Oklahoma.
Earl married Lillian Irene Reddout on February 9, 1947 in Cushing, Oklahoma. They were blessed with six children: Elisabeth “Beth”, Evelyn, Ernest “Ernie”, Elaine, Emily “Joyce”, and Ellen. Earl and Irene were married 53 years at the time of her death on November 27, 2000.
Mr. Adkins enjoyed the countless customers he befriended at Stillwater Fruit Market during his many years as a meat cutter. In 1972, he purchased a water well drilling business and spent the next two decades making numerous new friends throughout Payne and surrounding counties as owner and operator of Adkins Water Well Drilling.
On March 2, 2001, Earl married Evelyn Maxine Turnham, in Perkins. They were married 14 years at the time of his death.
Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and all of his siblings: Kenneth Everett Adkins; infant brother, William Henry “Billy” Adkins; Harold “Dean” Adkins; infant brother, Johnnie Louie Adkins; Clara Elizabeth “Betty”Johnston.
Earl is survived by his second wife, Maxine, of the home. He is also survived by his children: Beth Howey and husband Richard of Brenham, Texas; Evelyn McCaslin and husband Rob of Perkins; Ernie Adkins and wife Patty of Duncan; Elaine Lynch and husband Michael of Stillwater; Joyce Winston and husband Matthew of Perkins; Ellen Long and husband Tony of Chandler. He is also survived by his grandchildren: David Howey and wife Kristi of Stillwater; Kathy Ford and husband David of Brenham, Texas; Lisa Bagg and husband Mike of Lahoma; Travis Adkins and wife Sarah of Duncan; Sara Baggett and husband Bo of Duncan; Tammy Motsinger and husband Erik of Del City; Scott McCaslin of Perkins; Erin Winston of Stillwater. He is survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition, Mr. Adkins is survived by his step-children: Teresa Lowe and husband Randy of Perkins, Jamie Hartney of Agra; Barney Lee Turnham and wife Kim of Perkins. He is also survived by six step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Catherine Nieman for her wonderful care through the past several years. We would also like to thank the care teams for SMC Home Health and Good Shepherd Hospice. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Hospice Nurse Bonna Bays for her skillful care and her love and support for both Earl and his family.
