Obituary for Wallace May

Wallace May
Wallace “Wally” Irvin May, 94, of Stillwater, passed peacefully on March 27th, 2017 at 11:50 a.m. with his Granddaughter Candy Baker and Step-Daughter Suzanne Coldiron by his side at the Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, OK. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.m. on March 29, 2017 at the Pawhuska Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his wife Kathleen. The Reverend Tom Haan, Deacon will officiate. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wally was born February 1, 1923 in Ponca City, Ok to Claude and Nora May. He graduated from Ponca City High school in 1941, and then enlisted in the US Army Air Force. He served with distinction during World War II, receiving several awards, and was selected for Officer Candidate School. He was honorably discharged in 1949, and returned to Oklahoma.

Wally graduated from Tulsa University in 1950 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. While at TU he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

On March 28th, 1958, Wally and Kathleen Norris were married, and made their home in Fairfax, where Wally was a petroleum engineer for Halliburton Industries. He was highly regarded by his coworkers who called on him day and night to help solve problems on well sites. He retired in 1986 after 36 years of dedicated service.

Wally moved to Stillwater in 2012, to be close to his granddaughter, Candy Coldiron Baker, who cared for him the remaining years of his life. She lovingly referred to him as “Da”, short for Dad.

He was a devout Catholic, praying the Rosary on a daily basis. He was a man of conviction, and no one questioned his sense of right or wrong.

Wally enjoyed fishing, but above all else he was an avid reader, much preferring the printed word to TV or radio. He was a sharp dresser, often referred to as a dapper gentlemen. Although seemingly gruff at times, he had a heart of gold, and provided well for his family, both materially and spiritually. In somewhat of a contrast to his conservative ways, he enjoyed his 1968 Candy Apple Red Mustang Convertible, driving it every day until he quit driving at age 90.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; his parents; three brothers; one sister.

He is survived by three stepchildren, Jimmy Norris, Fairfax, Suzanne and Connie Coldiron of Stillwater; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two god sons, Blake Brown and Cash Baker of Stillwater. Wally also leaves behind two very special friends, Sherry Cole and Kim Turney of Stillwater.

Donations may be made in Wally’s name to St. Francis Xavier Parish, Stillwater, OK.

Condolences may be emailed to the family and an online obituary viewed by visiting www.strodefh.com .
