Linda Jean Stangl, 74, passed from this life on March 5, 2018 in Stillwater, OK after a 4-year battle with breast cancer. A memorial service will be 2:30 pm Saturday, March 10, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater.
Linda was born on April 19, 1943 to Clarence and Norma Schladweiler in Aberdeen, SD, living near Bath, SD while her father served in WW II. They moved to Madison, SD and in 1949 moved to a farm. In 1967 Linda took the hand of her love, Gerald Stangl.
Linda graduated from General Beadle High School in 1961 and was highly involved in Home Economics and Agricultural 4-H clubs and in helping with the family farm. Linda had a great love for horses and playing sports.
Linda worked as a dental assistant and teacher’s assistant to finance her college. In 1968 she graduated from Dakota State University in Madison, SD with a degree in Physical Education, Health and Recreation. Linda and Gerald moved to Stillwater, OK in 1968. She worked as a Teacher’s Aid at the Chilocco Indian School. In 1971, they moved to Perry, OK and later purchased an 80-acre farm. She bred and raised Appaloosa race and show horses for 25 years. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association, the National Appaloosa Horse Club and regional Appaloosa horse clubs. In 1989 she received a national Breeder’s Incentive Award in Las Vegas, NV from the National Appaloosa Horse Club. Besides her horse hobby Linda loved to raise cattle, work with homeless cats and dogs, and raised gardens. She enjoyed outdoor sports and helped her husband build barns, fences and other things to beautify their farm. Later Linda worked at Rush Metals in Billings, OK. In the late 1970s, she was a bindery worker at OSU Printing and Publishing and later at Career-Tech Print Shop in Stillwater, OK to the mid-1980s. Linda and Gerald returned to Stillwater in 1999. She was active with Stillwater Humane Society, Companion Animal Assistance Program and the Senior Center. She was an avid player of 8-ball pool and various card and table games.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents, and survived by her husband.
The family is thankful for the excellent caregiving in recent months by Karman Legacy Hospice and Golden Heart Senior Care, and also the assistance from friends and churches.
