Johnny Lynn Herring 1937-2018
Johnny Lynn Herring went home to his Lord and Savior on August 8, 2018, after a courageous battle with Melanoma Cancer.
Johnny was born Monday, November 29, 1937, at home in Tipton, Oklahoma. He was the second of seven children born to Vernard and Lois Herring. He spent most of his childhood on farms near Tipton. He was active in FFA and in his church. He loved to ride horses with neighborhood kids including a certain girl named Barbara Kennedy.
After graduation from Tipton High School he attended Cameron College in Lawton. In 1959 he volunteered for the Army serving 16 months in Wurzburg, Germany. During his service he was able to tour France, Belgium, England, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. In the fall of 1961, he moved to Stillwater, OK to work at Weilmeinster’s Service Center.
On September 8, 1962, Johnny married his best friend and the love of his life, Barbara. They made their home in Stillwater, OK where they raised their 3 children.
Johnny served in the Army Reserves from November 1960 to December 1993, where he reached the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He was employed with Civil Service in the Department of the Army from July 1964 to July 1993.
After retirement, Johnny helped babysit his grandkids and served as a sponsor for their field trips and volunteered at church. He later became a volunteer driver for the Department of Human Services. In January 2004, Johnny and Barbara became Charter Members of Immanuel Baptist Church near Perkins.
Johnny loved to read, make up silly nicknames, and pick on family and friends. He loved his family and supported them in many endeavors. He was always willing to help those in need and could talk to anyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Laverne Herring and sister Sue Collington, his son Scott, and his grandson Braden Osborne as well as many in-laws.
He is survived by Barbara, his wife of almost 56 years, his son Derek Herring, and 2 daughters
Diana (James) Aldridge and Tara (Bob) Osborne; his grandchildren-Drew (Holly), Cody (Kaylie), and
Josh Wehr; Michaela, Delaina, and Kaden Herring; Lauren, Kelsey, and Colton Osborne; Nathan
(Suzzy), Zoey, and Mika Aldridge; and 3 great grandchildren, Lilly and Hannah Aldridge and Parker Wehr. He is also survived by 3 brothers-Jerry, Tommy (Judy), and Rex (Candy) Herring and 1 sister-Betty Broyles as well as multiple nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at Strode Funeral home on Sunday, August 12th from 5-7 p.m. Family will be present to receive condolences. His memorial service will be held on Monday, August 13, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, Perkins, OK.
