Obituary for Diane Brodie Celarier

Diane Brodie Celarier
Diane Brodie Celarier, 95, passed away Feb. 10, 2017, in Houston, Texas, where she moved in 2010 to be near family after living 59 years in Stillwater, Okla., where she raised her two daughters.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. February 25, 2017 at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel, 610 Duncan, in Stillwater,Ok. and a reception will follow the service at the First United Methodist Church, where Diane was a longtime member. She will be buried in private at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stillwater next to her beloved husband, Robert.

Diane was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Alma, Arkansas, the first of what would be nine children, to George Elmer and Carmel Brodie. Following high school graduation with highest honors, she moved to Little Rock to attend business school and met her future husband, Robert P. Celarier, who would go on to become a professor of botanical genetics at Oklahoma State University.
Diane and Robert married in 1944, during World War II, and gave birth to their first daughter, Mimi, in 1945, in Little Rock. They moved to Baton Rouge, La., where their second daughter, Michelle, was born in 1949 while Robert was a student at Louisiana State University, and then to College Station, Texas, where Robert studied for his PhD at Texas A&M College before joining the OSU Botany Department in 1951.
After Dr. Celarier died suddenly in 1959, the then 37-year-old Diane went to work at OSU as chief administrative assistant in the Philosophy Department, and later on, the Humanities Division and the Global Studies Department. She retired in 1988 and continued to work part-time as a volunteer at Judith Karman Hospice and Elite Repeat until she moved to Houston.

Diane is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and five siblings: Sadie Gregory, Juanita Burkett, Jim Brodie, George Brodie and Jack Brodie.

She is survived by her daughters Mimi Lazarone and husband Barry Dolgow, of Houston, Texas, and Michelle Celarier and husband Taher Shafie, of Croton-on-Hudson, New York. Other immediate family survivors include her granddaughter Angela Lazarone Lawton and her husband Tim Lawton, grandson Tony Lazarone and wife Elizabeth Lazarone, and great-grandsons Quinton Lawton, Zachary Lawton and Ethan Goodwin, all of Houston.
Three of her siblings, Ruby Jones, Barbara Green and Bill Brodie survive her, as do many nieces and nephews and their children.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Diane’s name to the City of Stillwater Public Library.
