Obituary for James Arthur Eck

James “Jim” Arthur Eck, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Services will be held at the Stillwater Church of Christ at 1:30 PM on August 19 with Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Meno, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jim was born on September 11, 1944, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Ollie William Eck and Emmalee Massey Eck. As a small child, his family lived in Ringwood, Oklahoma, and later the family moved to Fairview, Oklahoma, where he attended school through the 12th grade. On September 15, 1962, he married Peggy Ann Kliewer in Fairview, Oklahoma.

He joined the United States Army in 1962 serving the 11th Air Assault Division, which later became the 1st Cavalry to Vietnam at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He was selected as the 11th Air Assault Aviation Group Soldier of the year for his unit. It was during this time that they welcomed their first daughter Roxanne in December of 1963. He was honorably discharged in 1965. Following discharge, they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma. He enrolled in and attended Oklahoma State University, receiving his B.S. degree in Forestry in 1970 and an M.S. degree in Horticulture in 1971. They moved to Longview, Washington, where he was an extension forester for Washington State University on Mt. Saint Helens. Here, their second daughter, Mandie Leigh, was born in 1972. In this year, the family returned to Oklahoma where he worked at the Muskogee General Hospital as their grounds superintendent. In 1976, they moved to Fairview, Oklahoma, where he owned and operated a nursery and garden center for several years. In 1988, he was hired by the City of Ponca City as horticulturist/forester and later was promoted to parks superintendent. During this time, he was instrumental in getting the Cann Garden registered as a botanical garden and arboretum. He also wrote a weekly article for the Ponca City News entitled “Over the Fence” for several years. Jim retired from the Ponca City Park Department after 21 years of service in 2010. Ponca City Council of Garden Clubs honored Jim with a bronze statue by Jo Saylor entitled “Dandelion Days” which can be found overlooking the Koi pond at the Cann Memorial Gardens. Jim and Peggy moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to be near their daughters in 2015.

Jim’s attention to detail and ingenuity was reflected in his personal life as well. He enjoyed restoring three airplanes and four pickup trucks. He also enjoyed hunting for Native American artifacts and gardening. He loved flying and earned his pilot’s license when he was 16 years old.

He was very proud of his two daughters, and their success in life is a testament to his unconditional support. The birth of his two granddaughters and two grandsons brought him special joy. Jim was a member of the Stillwater church of Christ as well as the Hartford Avenue church of Christ in Ponca City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Karen Tepe and one brother, Robert Eck.

He is survived by his wife Peggy of 56 years, two daughters, Roxanne Warlick and her husband Steven of Stillwater, OK; Mandie Harris and her husband Chris of Stillwater, OK; four grandchildren, Morgan Masterson and her husband Greg of Oklahoma City, OK; Madison Spencer and her husband Luke of Oklahoma City, OK; Samuel James Harris and Jack Camron Harris of Stillwater, OK; an aunt, Mary Margaret Walenta of Fairview, OK; and several nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by his friends and family. Memorials may be given to the Stillwater church of Christ Missions Fund, 821 N. Duck St., Stillwater, OK, 74075.
