Obituary for Jewell Loraine Mahar

Jewell L. Mahar-McCorkle, 97, passed from this life on Friday October 26, 2018. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday October 30, 2018, at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater. Interment will follow at the Iowa Chapel Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the services.

Jewell Loraine was born on April 13, 1921 in Douglas County, Missouri to Boyd and Minnie (Hancock) Hicks. She was one of 13 children. The family moved to Tryon, Oklahoma in 1926 and lived there one year before moving to a farm 10 miles southwest of Perkins. Jewell lived most of her life in in that area. She attended Grand Center and Spring Hill schools. In 1937, she went to work cleaning houses and caring for the children of several families in the Perkins area. They included the Roy Fowble family, the Clifford Dillard family, the Gene Foreman family, and the Earl and Mae Decker family.
In 1940, she married Carl E.Mahar and in their early years lived back east while Carl was in the Army during the war. Jewell, meanwhile, held jobs in a hot dog factory and distillery, where she put tax stamps on bottles.
After moving back to Oklahoma, Carl and Jewell had one son, Carl “Ed” Mahar Jr. Carl passed away in 1990, just before their fiftieth anniversary.

Jewell belonged to the Olivet Extension Club for 33 years and the Perkins 211 American Legion Auxiliary for almost 20 years. She was secretary and treasurer for the Iowa Chapel Cemetery for 42 years. Jewell cooked for the Lions Club in Perkins and made pies for the Payne County Extension Club at the County Fair for several years. Jewell was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Perkins.

In January 1996, Jewell married Eldon “Buck” McCorkle, her dance partner at the Perkins and Guthrie Senior Centers. Buck was from Guthrie, Oklahoma. They lived in both Guthrie and Perkins to be close to both of their families for the 10 years they had together. Our time with Buck was all too short. He passed away in February of 2006.

Jewell was a homemaker. She loved cooking, baking, telling people the correct way to make pie crust, sewing, and quilting. She liked fishing with the family and gardening. She loved raising a good vegetable garden and having lots of pretty flowers in her flower beds.

Jewell is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Carl Mahar and Buck McCorkle; sisters, Lena Burke, Ruby Bowne, Alma Baker, Imogene Hardy, Ann Moore, Eloise White, Thelma Bounds, and Ruth Armstrong; two brothers, Bob Hicks and Russell Hicks; and two half-brothers, Bud and Everett.

Survivors include one son, Ed, and his wife, Sally Mahar, of Perkins, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Rick, and his wife, Marla Mahar, of Perkins, and Robyn, and her husband, Eric Schoelkopf, of Vista, California; two great-grandchildren, Mitchell Mahar, working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South America and Elle Schoelkopf of San Diego, California. She also has many loving nieces and nephews; one stepdaughter, Mary Lou Chappell of Guthrie, Oklahoma; one stepson, Dick, and wife Sherry, of Houston, Texas; and many loving step grandchildren.
