Donald Lee Spurrier
Donald L. Spurrier, age 86, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, December 10, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
“Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.” – John Gillespie Magee
From his birth on January 10, 1932 to his death he cherished his family, friends, country and patriotism. He was born in Ava Missouri and was the youngest of his siblings. At the age of 22, Don left his family home to pursue a life in the United States Air Force. After being stationed in Enid, Oklahoma he met the love of his life, Melba Jean Quick. Following their marriage, on June 3, 1956, the couple traveled with the Air Force and welcomed into the world, their daughter, Donna, on May 23, 1964 and two years later, their son, Mark on January 6, 1966.
Don served as Lieutenant Colonel. He flew C-130s in the Vietnam war as well as flying B-52s during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The family lived in many places including Georgia, Hawaii, Arkansas and Oklahoma. After retiring from the Air Force on March 1, 1978, they settled in Stillwater. Donald attended Oklahoma State University and earned a Masters in Civil Engineering. His family then put down roots here in Stillwater, building homes and joining clubs. Don was a part of the Kiwanis Club, the Shriners, and is a Master Mason. Don and Melba volunteered many years running the gift shop at the Stillwater Medical center. He enjoyed taking photos of the newborn babies at the hospital for their parents. Don also volunteered many years driving for Meals on Wheels.
Don is preceded in death by his siblings and parents.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter; one son; one grandson, Conner and one granddaughter, Kennady.
Don was a loyal patriot; never forgetting how important his country was to him. He would wake up every morning and fly the American Flag in his front yard. He touched many lives and was a man of faith, loyalty, love, friendship and understanding.
