Dr. Richard Ortez, age 78, of Stillwater, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019 in Oklahoma City. The Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 29 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with burial following in Bethel Cemetery in Glencoe, Oklahoma.

Dr. Ortez was born in Hammond, Indiana on June 13, 1940 to Jesse and Wilma Ortez. He married his wife Mary Nunez Ortez on October 26, 1963. She preceded him in death on August 2, 2001.
He was educated at Creighton University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry; his Masters of Science majoring in biology; and his Doctor of Philosophy majoring in microbiology. He also attended the University of Maryland, Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, and St. John Vianney Seminary.
Dr. Ortez served in the United States Air Force, and also belonged to the Assumption Abbey in Ava, Missouri. He was a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Oklahoma State University. He was also well known in the community for his weekly articles in the Stillwater News Press.
Members of his family include his two sons, Dennis Ortez and wife Vicki and Victor Ortez and wife Diana; and his two daughters Lupe Lamkins and husband Matt and Dana Kurena and husband Troy. He also leaves behind his brother Arlis Peach, as well as seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
