Mattie Lena was born in Warner, OK to Fred and Gladys Johnson on August 11, 1930. She had five brother and two sisters. Mattie Lena married Arvel Sumpter on April 18, 1953 in Van Buren, Arkansas. Mattie Lena obtained a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Tahlequah, OK. Mattie Lena taught school in Eastern Ok before moving to Meeker in 1964. Mattie Lena retired from Meeker Elem. In May of 1986. Mattie Lena kept busy with sewing children’s clothing and making bears for missions for her church. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking, and telephone service. Mattie Lena was a member of Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, and was an Eastern Star.
She is survived by one daughter Jannie Barrington and husband Joe, granddaughter Mishelle Johnson of Stillwater and great grandsons Quinton Johnson of Stillwater, and Nicolas Johnson of Bedford, Ma and great granddaughters Katelin Sanogo of Stillwater, and Carli Winchester of Tempe, Az and one sister Zula Faught of Checotah.
She is preceded in death by husband Arvel Sumpter, daughter Melinda Beth Johnson, grandson Michael Johnson, parents Fred and Gladys Johnson, five brothers Clinton, Johnnie, Brown, Claudie, and Billy and sister Anna Lou.
Services will be held at Meeker Assembly of God with William Forman officiating the services. Burial will be at the Meeker New Hope Cemetery. Viewing will be held Friday May 15th at the Assembly of God Church in Meeker from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Strode Funeral Home and cremation is in charge of arrangements.
