Obituary

Gordon V. Johnson, 80, of Stillwater, Oklahoma passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 21 at his home. There will be a private family memorial service. A video with service and additional tribute, will be available at a later date on the Strode Funeral Home website and the Salem Lutheran Church YouTube channel. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gordon was born on January 9, 1940 in Harvey, North Dakota to Oscar and Signe Johnson. He had five brothers and one sister. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1959. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Schwarz, in high school and they were married July 27, 1962 in Fessenden, North Dakota. They lived in Fargo where Gordon completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture at North Dakota State University in 1963. They lived in cities Reno and Lincoln where Gordon completed his Master’s Degree at University of Nevada in 1966 and his Ph.D. from University of Nebraska in 1969. After completing his Ph.D., Gordon and Dorothy moved to Tucson, Arizona where he spent eight years in teaching and research at the University of Arizona in soil fertility, crop production and turf management.

In 1977, Gordon and Dorothy made their last move to Stillwater, Oklahoma when Gordon joined Oklahoma State University (OSU) as an Extension Specialist in soil nutrient management and as director of the Agronomic Services Laboratory. Gordon had an active extension program and provided leadership to the Certified Crop Adviser Program. He has published many journal articles, abstracts, fact sheets, popular press articles and several books on soil nutrient management. His last ten years at OSU, Gordon taught the soil fertility course and was a member of a Precision Sensing Research Team. He retired after 38 years of service on December 2003, as a Regents Professor of Soil Science.

Gordon was a very active member of Salem Lutheran Church. He had a very strong faith and combined with a sense of humor, set an example that will leave a lasting imprint on the members of this church family. He loved to golf and was an avid Oklahoma State University Basketball fan. Both he and Dorothy started running later in life and they participated in many local races together. He and his daughter became running partners for many years when Dorothy stopped running. He did his one and only marathon at the age of 60, in Washington, D.C. Woodworking became a hobby after retiring and one can see his amazing work at Salem Lutheran Church, Zannotti’s Wine Bar and in the homes of family and friends. He was a member of the Stillwater A cappella singing group and the Stillwater Community Singers.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy; children, Alane Zannotti, Daniel (Angi) Johnson; siblings, Everett Johnson, Dennis (Norma) Johnson and Delores Jensen; sisters-in-law, Donna Schwarz, and Mavis Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar C. and Signe Johnson; his step-father, Alfred Bakken; brothers, Norris Johnson, James Johnson, Marvin Johnson; sisters-in-law, Dotty Johnson and Delores Johnson; brother-in-law, Owen Jensen.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Salem Lutheran Church, 101 S. Duck, Stillwater, OK 74074 or Our Daily Bread, 701 E 12th Ave, Stillwater, OK 74074.

Condolences may be sent to the family and an online obituary viewed by visiting www.strodefh.com.
