Richard Wayne Buchanan passed from this life on August 20, 2020. His visitation service will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2020 at Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater. His memorial service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater. Those wishing to view his service virtually may contact the family for a livestream link. Social distancing guidelines will be observed at both the visitation and funeral service. The family values the support of the Stillwater Community and wants to keep everyone safe. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

He was born August 6, 1946 in Oklahoma City to Harry Lafayette and Ola B. Buchanan. Richard lost his father to death when he was an infant. He then spent his early years with his two Native American grandmothers in Carter and Love counties, who as he said, molded his personality and behavior, affected his philosophies, and influenced a great deal of his life. He moved to Oklahoma City to live with his mother to start grade school, and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1964. Richard worked as a clerk for Sohio Oil Company for two years, then accepted a job at Kerr-McGee Corporation in the oil and gas accounting department.

He attended Central State College in Edmond studying accounting and became the chief accountant of Oil and Gas Worldwide at Kerr-McGee, passing the CPA exam in 1977. He established his own CPA practice in 1980, specializing in oil and gas clients until the petroleum industry collapse in 1986. He and his family then relocated to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where he practiced public accounting for the expatriate community and served as executive director of a foundation providing health care to indigent reservation Indians. His last four years in Mexico were spent as the general manager of a large assembly operation for the “Precious Moments” giftware company.

He moved to Stillwater in 1995 and enrolled at Oklahoma State University completing a B.S. degree in International Business. He attended graduate school and taught courses at OSU in accounting and finance for 22 years, retiring in 2017. He belonged to Frontier Rotary, the Knife and Fork Club, and the Gideons. Richard served as a trustee and on the finance committee of Stillwater First United Methodist Church, served on the City of Stillwater Board of Adjustment, and sat on the Eagle Scout Board of Review for the Cimarron Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was also active in the United Methodist Men, delivered food for the “Our Daily Bread” ministry, and was active in OSU Greek student life activities.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, mother, one brother, and only sister.

He is survived by his wife Diane, son Adam and wife Nicole of North Carolina, their sons Peyton and Pierson, daughter, Bethany and her daughters, Lily and Ava of Stillwater. He has one living brother, Larry Buchanan of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their tremendous gratitude and appreciation to the nursing staff of Karman Legacy Hospice for the loving care shown to him in his last days.

Memorials can be made to the Oklahoma State University Foundation: fund 20-90430, Richard and Diane Buchanan Endowed Scholarship in music: 400 S Monroe St, Stillwater, OK 74074.

Richard Buchanan was an amazing friend and colleague to me and mentored many, many students at OSU through the years. Everyone in my family knew him and thought highly of him. He will be dearly missed! I am thankful to have known him! He was an inspiration to many people! Diane, Adam, and Bethany - Cherish the many good memories!

I did not learn of Richard's passing until yesterday. I did not know he was unwell. During my time as head of the Music Department at OSU, Richard was a great help and encourager, as well as being a generous donor who always had the very best interest of students at heart. His generosity and support has touched innumerable lives, and his passion for the academic community and his conviction of the necessity of the arts in any educated person's world was an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace, Prof. Buchanan—you left the world a much better place for having been in it!

Dear Diane, Adam, and Bethany,
This last 6 weeks has been quite a journey for us all, a sad but necessary journey. I thank you all for including me in this journey. I got to know all of you so much better and a love formed in my heart for all of you. It was a joy to stay with Richard that week even though he had his ups and downs. He had many stories and also was a good listener. I will so miss him but I probably will make Diane a little tired of me thinking of different things to do.
Love to you all and joy to Richard as he is with hiS Heavenly Father.

Our deepest sympathy in the loss of Richard. We had some interesting moments together at John Marshall HS in OKC, and I am grateful that we have been in touch with each other over the last 20 years or so. He is fully healed now and at rest in his heavenly home. God Bless. Robert E. Deering, JMHS Class of '64.

Funniest and favorite professor I ever had. Helped me get an amazing job a few years ago. Richard was always kind and devoted to his students. May God rest his soul.
