Obituary

Emery Frank Ferguson, Jr. passed away from this life on Monday, December 7, 2020 at his home in Mustang, Oklahoma. His memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation are in charge of arrangements.

Born on March 5, 1937 to Emery Frank Ferguson and Reva Rosamund (Good) Ferguson, he grew up in rural Glencoe OK, graduating from Eureka High School in 1955. He attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, where he participated in the Air Force ROTC and graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree. During that time, he married Zola M. Porter on December 1, 1957. They were married for 51 years.

He entered the US Air Force upon graduation and achieved the rank of Captain before receiving an honorable discharge and joining American Airlines in 1966 as a flight engineer based in Nashville, TN. While with American Airlines he attended the Nashville YMCA Night Law School and graduated with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence. He practiced family law for many years, first in Shelbyville, TN and then in Greenville, TX after relocating there in 1981. He retired from American Airlines as a Captain in 1997 after 31 years.

After Zola (Porter) Ferguson’s passing in 2008, he married Maruca (Kahn) Ferguson on October 25, 2009. They were married for 11 years.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Sandra R. Ferguson.

He is survived by his wife, Maruca (Kahn) Ferguson, daughters Teresa G. Ferguson and Lea J. (Ferguson) Marlborough, stepdaughters Melissa L. (Price) Kumnick and Patricia L. (Price) Rees; sisters Judith L. (Ferguson) Bowman and Renee D. (Ferguson) Butler; brothers Billy D. Ferguson and Ronald L. Ferguson, as well as 2 grandchildren and 7 step grandchildren.

I can’t leave out that we had an Intellivision game system and we had some hilarious times with Mom and Dad playing it together as a family. Dad and I became particularly competitive about Space Armada. I went to bed a lot earlier and I would get up the next morning and find that he had written his new high score on a piece of paper so I would see it. Instead of saying good morning when he came downstairs the following morning I would blurt out my new high score that I had achieved. This went on all summer, it was a lot of fun.
Dad really loved games and for years when we came home to visit on weekends we all had lots of fun playing games. Pictionary was a real favorite.

When I was a younger adult I used to go home every other weekend or so & spend Saturday & Sunday with Mom & Dad. On Saturday night Mom would go to bed about 10 PM & Dad & I would stay up till one or two in the morning just talking. We’d talk about his job, my job, the farm, our pets, current events & politics. Everything was on the table. It was always a fun & lively discussion. I had made some choices when I was younger that he definitely didn’t approve of & I always thought I was a disappointment to him. I was always the first to get up the next morning and one Sunday morning out of the blue I found a note he had written on one of the yellow legal pads that were always lying around. It simply said “I am so proud of you. “ That meant the world to me & carried that piece of paper around with me for years.

My favorite memories of dad we’re all centered around how he loved to share his interests with us when we were growing up. From playing guitar and singing together to shooting and fishing. At one point he became a ham radio operator and Teresa and I learned Morse Code with him, which was a lot of fun.
We would make paper airplanes together and compete to make them better and better. I also remember that sometimes we would have radishes on the dinner table and I don’t even really think I liked them much until we realized how much he liked them and then it became a thing to get the last one. Once he held court over the last one and of course he was the judge. I believe he won the case if I remember correctly.
I remember having badminton tournaments in the driveway & Mom & Dad and Teresa and I going out to the dock at the pond every evening and feeding the catfish with floating food.
Those were good times.

My grandfather is a part of the reason my career has and will continue to allow me to travel the world. He shared all his stories about the wonderful people he met and the scenery that he encountered, of course including those big, beautiful animals in Zimbabwe. He inspired me to open my mind to other cultures and have a genuine interest in their lives and livelihood. I am forever grateful for the perspectives he gave and the world that he showed us.

One day when we were little and were living in Tennessee, Dad took us outside and dug up a couple of ice worms. He held them up and ate them, biting the heads off. Then he asked up if we wanted to try one. We turned pretty green before he finally admitted it was two pieces of spaghetti with faces painted on them!
