Dorthy M. Downey, 96, died May 7, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Twin girls Dorthy and Doris Reeder were born January 25, 1925, to John Thomas Reeder and Versie Hadley Reeder. Doris was born with digestive disease and passed away October 12, 1925, before their first birthday. Dorthy married Earl Clapp on May 23, 1946, becoming step-mom to Earl’s four children, Vera, Herb, Mary Ruth, and Alice. Earl and Dorthy became parents to Donna, in April 1952.
Dorthy thoroughly enjoyed being wife, mother, and homemaker, until Earl passed away unexpectedly in April 1962. She was suddenly faced with a fast learning curve due to the added responsibilities of being the sole provider. She met every challenge head-on and was able to obtain her driver’s license, began working outside the home, and learned to pay the bills. She worked several different types of jobs before putting her excellent sewing skills to work, where she was in charge of alterations at Bonnie’s dress shop in Stillwater. Besides being an expert seamstress, she had other hobbies and was adept at working jigsaw puzzles, playing dominoes, and crocheting.
Dorthy served her Lord with all her heart, mind, and soul. She taught children’s Sunday School classes at Calvary Assembly of God. She was active in Women’s Ministries, as well and made many fried pies at the church to assist in fundraising.
In 1972, she married James Downey, and moved back to Glencoe, OK. Together they continued helping their church in any capacity they could. Teaching and working with small children always brought her tremendous joy. Dorthy and Jim raised parakeets and chihuahua puppies they treated like their children. James passed away in January 2009.
In 2012, Dorthy moved to Farmers Branch, TX with daughter Donna and Son-in-Law Dwight. While she enjoyed watching airplanes arriving and departing the Dallas airports, what she loved the most was the opportunity to fly on those planes taking occasional trips to Florida, South Carolina, Colorado, and Tennessee. In October 2019, she was excited to experience the warmer winters of Florida and relocated with Donna and Dwight. Still, in her heart, home was always Glencoe, OK.
Dorthy is preceded in death by both parents; her husbands, Earl Clapp and James Downey; brothers John, Calvin, and Louis Reeder, and Grant Armstrong; sisters, her twin Doris Reeder, Lottie Christian, Alice Hover, and Lois Johnson; step-son Herbert Clapp; step-daughters Vera Wallace, Mary Ruth Dean, and Alice Knight and step-grandchildren, Dickey, Danny, Johnnie, and Dale Ray Wallace.
She is survived by daughter Donna Frye (Dwight) of Sebastian, FL; granddaughter Michelle Hoover (Jeff) of Trophy Club, TX; grandson Phillip Frye (Leigh Anne) of Indialantic, FL; great-grandchildren; Lance Corporal Jaren Bellendorf USMC, (Katarina) of North Carolina, Hayden Hoover of Trophy Club, TX, Tucker Frye, Maddox Frye, and Piper Frye of Indialantic, FL. and step-grandchildren Sharon Dudley, Lynn Wallace, Randy Wallace, Mary Potvin, Kathy Baker, Karen Campbell, Barbara Collum, Deb Lightfoot, Judi Dean, Kim Swearingen, and Terry Knight.
Dorthy adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To Dorthy, there were no “steps” in her family. She also loved and adored her nieces and nephews; they were the joy in her life and they returned her love! Special mention is Daniel Friend, whom she “adopted in her heart” since his mother lived so far away in Germany while he was a college student at OSU. Daniel and Beth currently live in South Carolina and pastor a church.

I was blessed to be able to call her "Mom" for so many years. She was there when I prayed to get saved and so many other times when I needed prayer. I look forward to seeing her again in Heaven. I hope I see you also.

I'm having a tree planted in memory of you Aunt Dorothy. It will provide shelter for birds, other animals, and give back to life, like you did.

So very appropriate since she housed so many birds in both her house and the "birdhouse" out back.
