Marliese Hall, 91, died peacefully in her sleep, with her son at her side, on May 27, 2021. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 in the Strode Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Deacon Glenn Collum of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Marliese was born to Lorenz and Marie Spitz on February 10, 1930 in Schwenningen (now Villingen-Schwenningen), Germany. On October 22, 1949 she married Heinz Hall and three years later immigrated to the United States, settling first in Oklahoma City and then in 1958 relocating to Stillwater where she resided until her death.

Marliese was a remarkable woman. Growing up she, along with her parents and sisters, survived the horror of living through Hitler’s Germany and its aftermath. Upon her arrival in the United States, she had to start a new life away from family and friends. Plus, speaking only German, she had to learn an entirely new language! In addition to being a homemaker and raising two sons, Marliese worked, first as a lab technician then a research associate, for 24 years for Dr. Franklin Leach in the Department of Biochemistry at Oklahoma State University. She was listed as an author and co-author on several publications relating to the biochemistry of light production in fireflies. Quite an accomplishment for someone without a college degree! Marliese loved to paint, read, and travel. Many summers were spent in Cuchara, Colorado where she enjoyed hiking, fishing, exploring old coal mining towns, and occasionally climbing and summiting some of the nearby mountains, most notably Trinchera and Blanca Peaks. Following her retirement, she and Heinz traveled throughout the canyonlands of the western United States until his death in 2016.

Marliese will always be remembered as a witty, thoughtful, and compassionate person. She faced life’s challenges head on with courage, determination, and grace. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mathilde and Maria, her husband of 67 years, Heinz, and son Mark. Marliese is survived by her son Michael and his wife Annette of Shreveport, Louisiana, her granddaughter Stephanie Hall of Dallas, Texas, her nephew Hardy Pfeiffer of Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, and her niece Ursula Nan of Bad-Dürrheim, Germany.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers for the care, support, and compassion they provided for Marliese during her final days. A special thanks goes out to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Stillwater Medical Center and the staff at Karman Legacy Hospice for the care and comfort that they provided. The family would also like to thank Melissa Kennedy, Marliese’s in-home ‘Care Giver Supreme’ for the last seven months. Not only was she an amazing caregiver, but she became one of Marliese’s dearest friends! And finally, a deep, heartfelt thank you to Marliese’s longtime friends, Carol and Jim Wickstead, Jean D’Offay, Dee Dutt, and Dr. Inge Hayes. There are not enough words to express all that you have done for Marliese over the years. Your friendship and kindness meant a lot to her!

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Marliese’s name to Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue, Karman Legacy Hospice, Stillwater Medical Foundation, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, the OSU Foundation (Dr. Franklin R. Leach Research Scholars Endowment Fund) or to the charity of one’s choice.
