She was born on May 20, 1952 to Floyd and Bernadine Burger in Stroud, Oklahoma before moving to Gilbert, Arizona where she spent most of her childhood and met her husband, Doug Sumrall. Doug and Barbara were married on December 22, 1973 and would live in Gilbert until moving back to Oklahoma in 1981 when they lived in Chandler, Oklahoma. They would move to Perkins, Oklahoma in 1989 where they would stay until 2004 and then back again in 2019 while calling Stillwater, Oklahoma home between those years.
Barbara enjoyed playing the piano at many churches (Chandler, Carney, Perkins & Morrison) where she felt she could best serve the Lord while passing along the Gospel in music. She would continue making music while singing with many of her closest friends until it was no longer possible to do so. Even after no longer being able to perform in public, Barbara could be heard singing, humming and simply listening to the songs that she sang over the many years while performing. Barbara’s faith in Jesus Christ helped her during her battle with cancer and allowed her to find peace in the inevitable. She would often say if it’s her time to go she knew where she was going and she was excited to see her sister, Kaylea, and her parents again.
Barbara’s greatest pride and joy in life was her three sons and her five grandchildren. Everything she did was for “the boys”. She was constantly going above and beyond as the boys grew up. The pride she had in her sons was no secret as she told anyone that would listen story after story about all three whether they knew them or not. The light of Barbara’s life was being Gammy to her five grandchildren. Any time she saw or talked to her grandkids, she just lit up and nothing else existed at that moment. Barbara loved her grandkids and never missed an opportunity to talk about them to her friends and brag about a hit in baseball, a shot in basketball, a dance recital, or a developmental milestone that they hit recently.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Floyd & Bernadine Burger, sister Kaylea Lockhart, brother-in-law Clint Lockhart and her 3 best friends (dogs): Zeke, Zoe & Molly.
