Obituary for Mary Beth Pickney

Mary Beth Fowler Pickney, nee Boynton, age 80, died April 30, 2022, at Porta Caeli House in Tulsa, OK, after a diagnosis of cancer. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel.

Mary Beth was a native of Ft Pierce, FL. She attended Dan McCarty High School and graduated in the class of 1959 and went on to attend the nursing program at the Palm Beach Jr. College in Lake Worth, Florida, 1959-1960. In June 1960, she was recruited by the FBI and went to Washington, DC to work.

She met Cleo Fowler of Stillwater, OK in Washington, DC. He was in new agent’s training at the FBI and Mary Beth was working as a secretary. They were united in marriage on August 12, 1961 in Ft Pierce, FL at the First Methodist Church where she was a member. They lived in multiple cities including Norfolk, VA, where her children Kelly, Lafe Jr, and Diane were born, and then lived in Knoxville, TN and Chattanooga, TN, where Cleo’s work as an FBI agent located them. In Chattanooga, she worked as a secretary for the Tennessee Valley Authority. They later moved to Oklahoma City in 1968, where Nancy was born. After their divorce, she resided in Edmond, OK, Oklahoma City, OK, Lilburn, GA, Ft Pierce, FL, Port St. Lucie, FL, St Petersburg, FL, Rock Springs, WY, and finally Owasso, OK.

She attended the University of Central OK in Edmond, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of South FL in Tampa, FL, where she earned a master’s degree in Library and Information Science. She worked at the FAU campus joint-use library in Ft Pierce, FL, and was the branch manager for the Lakewood and Morningside libraries. She retired from the Ft Pierce library system in 2012.

Mary Beth was preceded in death by her parents Robert C Boynton, Sr and Edith Van Landingham Boynton of Ft Pierce, FL.

She is survived by her four children: Kelly Fowler of Collinsville, OK, Cleo Lafe Fowler, Jr and wife Adrianne Fowler of Atlanta, GA, Diane Fowler White and husband, Cricket White of Rock Springs, WY, and Nancy Fowler Simpson of Rock Springs, WY; three grandchildren: Katie Fowler Welkner and husband, Zach Welkner of Canton, GA, Matthew Fowler of Marietta, GA, and John Simpson of Rock Springs, WY; her brother, Robert Boynton, Jr and his wife, Sandy Boynton of Rathdrum, ID; two nieces Laura Boynton of Bellingham, WA, and Annie Boynton of Minnetonka, MN; lifelong friends Janet Hostettler Hiott of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Marcella Gorsuch Linn of Mt. Gilead, OH.
